Understanding Who You Are in Christ Jesus

Many Christians struggle with anxiety, fear, and a sense of inadequacy without realising these are spiritual battles rooted in a deeper identity problem. The answer is not found in reasoning through our problems but in receiving a revelation of who we truly are in Christ.

Why Does Identity Matter So Much in the Christian Life?

One of the most transformative revelations a believer can receive is understanding their identity in Christ Jesus. When that truth takes root in your Spirit, most of the issues, problems, and things that trouble the mind begin to melt away. You simply know, deep down, who you are in Him.

We are made up of Spirit, soul, and body. Before the fall, man's Spirit was the dominant influence in life. God is Spirit, and in the Garden of Eden, humanity walked in fellowship with Him. But after sin entered, the mind became the dominant force. Since then, God has been working to transform us through the renewing of our minds, bringing our soul life back into unity with our Spirit.

What Is the Difference Between a Soul-Led Life and a Spirit-Led Life?

The soul operates through reason, intellect, and personal will. It says, "I see it, I want it, I will do it." The Spirit, however, operates through revelation. God speaks to our Spirit, and when our Spirit is in sync with the Holy Spirit, we are led in the right direction.

Many people seek help from sources that only minister to the mind. They try to reason out their problems, going around in circles without resolution. But you cannot overcome a spiritual problem by natural means. God wants to get to our Spirit, because that is where lasting transformation happens.

The Slave Mentality: 

What Israel's Story Teaches Us

The Israelites had been in Egypt for around 400 years, many of those years spent in brutal slavery. What is striking is that Pharaoh acted out of fear. He saw that the Israelites were mightier than the Egyptians, but the Israelites themselves could not see it.

So Pharaoh set cruel taskmasters over them. His goal was to give them a slave mentality. He wanted them to believe they were lesser, inferior, and unfit for anything greater. The taskmasters made their lives bitter and miserable, all designed to keep them down.

This is exactly what the enemy does today. He sees that we are mightier than he is. We have more than he has. So he works to keep us living with a slave mentality, telling us we are not enough, that we cannot do it, that we are inferior.

What Happens When God Speaks a Word of Freedom?

Eventually, the Israelites cried out to God. He sent Moses with a clear word: "Let my people go." But notice what happened first. When God's word came, the taskmasters tightened their grip. Things got worse before they got better.

This is important. When we are pressing toward a breakthrough, personally or as a church, do not be surprised if the battle gets hotter first. The enemy tightens his grip to keep people down. But while the enemy is putting pressure on us, God is putting even greater pressure on the enemy. His pressure breaks the power of the enemy's pressure.

A slave mentality grumbles and blames. A kingdom mentality rejoices. As Paul writes, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13). That is not a slave's confession. That is a royal one.

You Cannot Mix Two Cultures

When Israel came out of Egypt, they could not bring Egypt's culture with them. The two simply do not mix. God was building them into a new people with a new culture, defined by shared beliefs, shared goals, and shared core values rooted in His Word.

The same is true for believers today. You cannot mix the culture of the world with the culture of the kingdom. They are opposites. This does not mean withdrawing from the world or refusing friendships with those who are not saved. It means that the world's influence does not change who you are. You belong to Jesus.

What Are Precepts and Why Did God Give Them?

To build this new culture, God gave Israel laws and precepts. A precept is a principle or direction that guides behavior and moral conduct. These were not restrictions designed to make life miserable. They were teachings that showed people how to live effectively and powerfully.

These precepts would not only take them into the promised land but would empower them to overcome giants. They were not yet giant slayers in their own minds, but God knew they could be. His Word was transforming them, renewing their minds, preparing them for everything He had called them to.

The Blue Thread: A Symbol of Royal Identity

In Numbers 15, God gave a specific instruction. He told the Israelites to put tassels on the corners of their garments, and within those tassels, to weave a blue thread.

"Speak to the children of Israel: tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners. And you shall have the tassel, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them." (Numbers 15:38-39)

The tassels were a reminder of God's Word and His precepts. But the blue thread carried a deeper message. Blue in Scripture represents royalty. God was not just saying, "Remember my commands." He was saying, "Remember who you are. You are no longer slaves. You are royalty."

Every time they looked at those tassels and saw that blue thread, it was a declaration. We are a royal people. We are not lesser. We are not inferior. We are God's chosen, called-out people.

We Are a Royal Priesthood

This theme of royalty runs all the way through Scripture. We are called a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God. We have robes of righteousness. We are not slaves living lesser lives. We are royal priests with a royal destiny.

The giants that sit on our inheritance can be driven out. King David did not hesitate before Goliath. He ran at him. That is royal living. We do not falter in hesitation. We run at the giants because we have the victory in Christ.

What Are the Taskmasters in Our Lives Today?

Just as Pharaoh used taskmasters to keep Israel in bondage, there are spiritual taskmasters that seek to keep believers down today. These include:

• Anxiety
• Fear
• Stress
• The need to control
• The love of money

People who feel the need to control everything around them are themselves controlled by a taskmaster. Fear of letting go keeps them bound. But Jesus sets us free. When you abandon yourself to Him, you experience a freedom that no amount of reasoning can produce.

Jesus defeated every taskmaster at the cross. The victory is already won. We simply need to walk in it.

Why Reading the Bible Matters More Than We Think

A large survey in America found that 70% of Christians in the churches surveyed had never read the Bible from cover to cover even once. Yet God's Word is where the promises are. It is where life is found.

There are 1,186 chapters in the Bible. Reading just three and a quarter chapters a day means you will have read the entire Bible in one year. God's precepts, His promises, and His revelation of who we are in Him are all found in His Word. We cannot live as a royal people if we do not know what the King has said.

Do Not Look Back

Of the entire first generation that left Egypt, only Joshua and Caleb entered the promised land. The rest missed it, largely because they kept looking back to Egypt. Every time they looked back, they went negative. They grumbled. They blamed. And they disqualified themselves from the breakthrough.

The only way forward in the kingdom is forward. "Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith." (Hebrews 12:2). Looking back lifts the anointing and pulls us away from everything God is doing. We are called to accept the royal invitation and press forward.

Do Not Make Light of the Royal Invitation

In Matthew 22, Jesus tells the parable of the wedding feast. Many were invited but made light of it. They treated the invitation as unimportant. The consequences were serious.

We cannot afford to make light of what God is inviting us into. He is calling us to live as His chosen people, to carry the culture of the kingdom into the world around us, and to see giants driven off our inheritance. That is not a small invitation. It is a royal one.

Life Application

This week, identify one area of your life where you have been living with a slave mentality rather than a royal one. It might be anxiety telling you that you cannot cope, fear telling you to hold back, or a habit of grumbling when things get hard instead of pressing forward in faith.

Choose one practical step to renew your mind in that area. Open the Word of God and find a promise that speaks directly to it. Read it daily. Speak it out loud. Let it move from your mind into your Spirit until you know that you know who you are in Christ.

Ask yourself these questions:

• Am I living from my Spirit, led by the Holy Spirit, or am I being driven by my own reasoning, emotions, and will?
• What taskmasters have I allowed to have a grip on my life, and am I willing to let Jesus break that hold?
• Am I investing time in God's Word so that His precepts and promises are genuinely shaping how I think and live?
• Is there anything I am looking back at that is pulling me away from what God is calling me into?

You are not a slave. You are royalty. Live like it.
