The God of all Comfort

Finding True Comfort: Why God's Comfort Surpasses All Others

When life gets difficult, we all seek comfort somewhere. But where we turn for that comfort makes all the difference between temporary relief and lasting peace.

Where Do We Usually Turn for Comfort?

As humans, we naturally develop ways to comfort ourselves when we're troubled or upset. Some common sources include:

  • Food (comfort eating)
  • Shopping and buying things for ourselves
  • Entertainment and distractions
  • Pets and relationships
  • Holidays and escapes from routine

While some of these are harmless in moderation, others can become destructive when taken to excess - like drugs, alcohol, or unhealthy relationships. The fundamental problem with all these sources is that they provide only temporary comfort.

The Problem with Temporary Comfort

These momentary distractions might block out our problems for a while, but once the moment passes, the underlying issues remain. You might watch several TV programs in a row to distract your mind, but when the shows end, the problems are still there waiting for you.

This is why we need to learn to seek comfort from the God of all comfort - because His comfort is both true and lasting

What Makes God's Comfort Different?

In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, we read: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any way troubled with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."

He is the Father of Mercies

Notice that "mercies" is plural - meaning God has mercy upon mercy for us. This mercy means compassion and pity, but it's not passive. God actively looks to bring compassion and help into our lives and situations. He's not sitting back pointing fingers, but actively working to help us.

He is the God of All Comfort

The word "comfort" comes from a root meaning "to call near." Picture someone opening their arms wide and pulling you close, holding you tight. This is the God who calls us near.

God's comfort exceeds initial soothing. It imparts hope, grace, and strength, bringing a lasting sense of wellness and the power to overcome. This comfort empowers us, enables us, and brings victory and strength to keep going.

How Does God's Comfort Work in Our Lives?

It's Comfort for All Tribulations

God comforts us in ALL tribulation - even the troubles of our own making. While some people are quick to blame the devil for everything, sometimes our struggles come from our own choices. But God still offers comfort and shows us the way forward.

It Brings Lasting Change

God's comfort doesn't just make us feel better temporarily. It changes both our circumstances and the way we feel, think, and act within those circumstances. We're called to be the head and not the tail, to live victorious lives in Christ Jesus.

What Did Jesus Come to Do?

In Isaiah 61:1-3, we see Jesus' mission statement - the scripture He quoted when He began His ministry:

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound... to comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness."

The Great Exchange

Jesus came to make a mighty exchange in our lives:

  • Beauty for ashes
  • Joy for mourning
  • Praise for heaviness
  • Liberty for captivity
  • Healing for brokenheartedness

For everything in your life that seems ruined or destroyed, Jesus wants to give you beauty for ashes. This is the God of all comfort at work.

How Do We Access God's Comfort?

Stay Connected to the Source

Jesus said, "I am the vine, you are the branches." We must stay connected to Him, drawing our life source from His life. Jesus overcame everything - death, hell, and every attack of the enemy. In Christ Jesus, we can overcome everything that comes against us.

Choose to Be of Good Cheer

Jesus gives us peace, but being of good cheer is our responsibility. Sometimes when everything hurts and life is difficult, it's hard to be cheerful. But we can choose to be miserable or choose to be of good cheer.

We can declare: "I rejoice in the Lord always, and again I will say rejoice!" The more we choose to be of good cheer in the Lord, the more the atmosphere around us changes.

Put on the Garment of Praise

We've been given the garment of praise instead of the spirit of despair, but we have to put it on. Sometimes we don't want to - there's almost a strange comfort in feeling sorry for ourselves. But the garment of praise chases away the spirit of despair and breaks it off of us.

The Power of Sacrifice

Hebrews 13:15-16 mentions several sacrifices that please God:

  • The sacrifice of praise - praising when we don't feel like it
  • The sacrifice of thanksgiving - thanking God even in tough circumstances
  • The sacrifice of doing good - getting out of our own heads to bless others
  • The sacrifice of sharing - sharing time, encouragement, and help with others

A sacrifice isn't from a place of abundance and ease - that's what makes it a sacrifice. But God's power always comes on the sacrifice.

Seek God Wholeheartedly

Jeremiah 29:10-14 tells us to:

  • Call upon God
  • Pray to God
  • Seek God
  • Search for God
  • Be wholehearted in our pursuit of Him

The resulting blessings are incredible: peace, hope, a future, God's attention, freedom from captivity, and God performing His good word toward us.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

Jesus introduced us to the Holy Spirit as our helper and comforter. The Holy Spirit is:

  • The Spirit of truth
  • A helper and comforter
  • A teacher and reminder
  • A guide who brings glory to Jesus
  • The one who enables us to bear all things
  • The source of breakthrough living inside us

"Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord." The source of breakthrough lives inside us through the Holy Spirit.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to turn to God first when you need comfort instead of reaching for temporary fixes. When you feel troubled, upset, or overwhelmed, practice these steps:

  • Acknowledge that God is the Father of mercies who actively wants to help you
  • Draw near to Him, knowing He calls you close
  • Choose to put on the garment of praise even when you don't feel like it
  • Offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, declaring God's goodness in your situation
  • Stay connected to Jesus as your source of strength and peace

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Where do I typically turn first when I need comfort?
  • Am I trying to handle my struggles through self-effort, or am I truly trusting God?
  • What would it look like for me to "be of good cheer" in my current circumstances?
  • How can I offer sacrifices of praise, thanksgiving, doing good, and sharing this week?

Remember, your happiness matters to God, your value isn't just in what you do but in who you are as His child, and you are neither unloved nor helpless. God wants to give you beauty for ashes and transform every difficult situation into an opportunity for His comfort and victory to be displayed in your life.
