Victory in the Mind: How to Fight Back

Dressed for Battle: Understanding Your Spiritual Clothes and the Armour of God

Before charging into spiritual warfare, there is something important to get right first. The armour of God is powerful, but what you wear underneath it matters just as much. This is a look at the spiritual garments God has given every believer and why getting dressed in the right order changes everything.

Why Does the Order of Spiritual Growth Matter?

Ephesians 6:10-18 is one of the most well-known passages in the Bible. It describes the full armor of God and calls believers to stand firm against the enemy. But there is one word at the beginning of that passage that is easy to overlook: "Finally."

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might." - Ephesians 6:10 New King James Version (NKJV)

That word "finally" means something. It means that before the armor, before the battle, before the big breakthroughs, there are other things that need to be in place.

What Are the Four Walks That Come Before the Armor?

Earlier in the book of Ephesians, four distinct walks are described for the believer. These come before the call to put on the armor of God.

  • Walk in unity (Ephesians 4)
  • Walk in love (Ephesians 5)
  • Walk in light (Ephesians 5)
  • Walk in wisdom (Ephesians 5)

Many people want to rush toward the big demonstrations of God's power. There is nothing wrong with wanting more of God. But when these foundational walks are skipped, the result is often a flash of breakthrough rather than something lasting.

The word that keeps coming up in all of this is consistency. As one well-known teacher once said, "In the consistency lies the power." God is looking for a people who will be consistent so He can trust them with greater things.

What Other Things Need to Be in Place Before the Armour?

Ephesians also speaks about being seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. This is about understanding your position and authority before you ever engage in battle. The enemy is under your feet. That revelation needs to come first.

The book also addresses right relationships, honoring your spouse in a Christian marriage, and honoring your parents. These are not small things. The Bible promises that it goes well with those who honor their parents. These are building blocks that need to be laid before stepping into greater spiritual authority.

What Are the Spiritual Garments God Has Given Us?

Isaiah 61:3 speaks of a garment of praise given in exchange for a Spirit of heaviness. A garment is meant to be worn. It does no good sitting in the wardrobe.

You can choose to live heavy. God will allow it because He will not override your choices. But He has given you something better. You can put on the garment of praise and change the atmosphere around you. The devil hates praise. He cannot cope with it. When God's people praise Him, He inhabits those praises, and where God is, the enemy has to flee.

Isaiah 61:10 goes even further:

"I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness." - Isaiah 61:10 New King James Version (NKJV)

God has clothed every believer with garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness. This is how He sees you. In the realm of the Spirit, this is what you are wearing. The challenge is learning to see yourself the way God sees you.

Why Is Jesus the Armour Itself?

Every single piece of the armour of God points directly to Jesus.

  • He is the truth (the belt of truth)
  • He is our righteousness (the breastplate of righteousness)
  • He is the gospel of peace (feet shod with readiness)
  • He is the author and finisher of our faith (the shield of faith)
  • He is our salvation (the helmet of salvation)
  • He is the living Word (the sword of the Spirit)

When you bring your life into the reality of Jesus, He becomes your armor. Your part is to believe it and receive it. He has already done everything else.

What Does the Belt of Truth Actually Do?

Roman soldiers wore a belt with leather pieces hanging down. Before battle, they would tuck those pieces into the belt so they would not trip or lose their footing. The belt kept everything secure and allowed them to fight effectively.

Peter gives a clear instruction that mirrors this:

"Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ." - 1 Peter 1:13 New King James Version (NKJV)

The mind is the battlefield. You win or lose there before anything else happens. Every thought needs to be tucked into the belt of truth. If a thought does not line up with truth, it gets thrown out. Thoughts that are left flapping around will cause you to trip when you need to be standing firm.

How Does the Shield of Faith Protect Your Mind?

Roman soldiers sometimes used leather shields soaked in water. When fiery arrows came at them, the water quenched the flames before they could spread and cause damage.

The shield of faith works the same way. The enemy fires thoughts that burn and hurt. Thoughts like:

  • You are no good.
  • You do not belong.
  • This sickness cannot be healed.
  • Nothing can change.
  • God does not love you.

These thoughts are personal. They are designed to get in and cause damage. But God has given you a shield of faith to quench them before they take hold.

"Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one." - Ephesians 6:16 New King James Version (NKJV)

How Do You Practically Take Up the Shield of Faith?

Thoughts are made of words. Accusations and hurtful comments from others are also made of words. So you fight words with words.

The first step is to say no. No is a powerful word spiritually. Refuse to dwell on the thought. Do not entertain it. Do not make a meal of it. The faster you can reject it, the better.

If the thought has come through another person, forgive them and bless them. Then refuse to accept the words they spoke over you.

After saying no, declare truth. Speak what the Word of God says about you out loud.

  • When the enemy says you are no good, declare: "I am a son and daughter of the King."
  • When the enemy says you cannot do this, declare: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13 NKJV)
  • When the enemy says this sickness cannot be healed, declare: "By His stripes I have been healed." (Isaiah 53:5 NKJV)

Passivity does not work in the Christian life. It creates victims. Active faith creates warriors. And you are called to be a warrior. That is why you have been given armour.

What Does It Mean to Not Let the Storm Around You Become a Storm Within You?

There will always be storms circling around your life in one form or another. But when you take up the shield of faith and quench the fiery darts of the enemy, those storms do not have to get inside you. God wants His people to carry His peace at all times. That peace is possible because Jesus is the Prince of Peace and He lives in you.

When the enemy tries to remind you of your past, remind him of his future. The cross, the blood, and the empty tomb have already settled every accusation.

What Is God Building Right Now?

God is raising up a people who see themselves the way He sees them in the realm of the Spirit. Robed in righteousness. Clothed in salvation. Wearing garments of praise. Carrying the shield of faith.

The next great move of God is not meant to be a short flash. It is meant to be consistent and lasting. But that kind of breakthrough requires a people who have built the right foundations, who walk in unity, love, light, and wisdom, and who have put on the right spiritual clothes before reaching for the armor.

Now is the time to believe it and receive it like never before.

Life Application

This week, pay attention to the thoughts that come at you. When a fiery thought lands, do not dwell on it. Practice taking up the shield of faith by saying no out loud, forgiving anyone whose words have hurt you, and then declaring one truth from Scripture over your mind each day. Write it down. Say it every morning. Build the habit of fighting words with words rooted in truth.

Ask yourself these questions as you go through the week:

  • Am I walking in unity, love, light, and wisdom, or am I reaching for bigger things while neglecting the foundations?
  • Which fiery thoughts have I been dwelling on instead of quenching with the shield of faith?
  • Do I see myself the way God sees me, clothed in righteousness and salvation, or am I still wearing the old clothes of guilt and condemnation?
  • Am I choosing the garment of praise, or am I choosing heaviness?

Consistency is the key. Not a flash of breakthrough, but a steady, daily walk with Jesus who is your armour, your truth, your righteousness, your peace, your faith, your salvation, and your sword.
